Sept 19 Font de Gaume
The alarm went off at 5AM.
I wanted to get to the Grotte of the Font de Gaume for 7-ish. As my campinf neighbours, Stephen and Anne, were going to keep an eye on Happy and Topsy, I wanted to make sure that I was in the first tour. In fact arriving at 6.44, I gad spot No.5! No.1 was there at 5.53!
By 7.50, I persuaded a young ITU Nnurde from the USA called Emilly, to join me on a trip to the Boulangerie back down the road, where we had croissants, coffee and baguettes. Came back for the admission desk to open at 9.30. Eventuallt in on the first (English speaking) tour at 10AM. Bought a couple of T-shirts and then did the tour. The cave a crack in the rock 12m tall with painted pictures of bison in red (iron oxide) and black (manganese salt).
Sadly my eyesight letting me down and could not make out the figures that others saw. However work of artists 15-17,000 years ago. The better coloured ones had been covered in clay untill a dig in 1930s. So not as dramatic as I had hoped.
Got back to relieve the dog-sitters and we all trouped up to the bar for a lunchtime beer.
Then just collapsed for the afternoon with a brief walk to the river with the dogs. Had a swim then a chat with Iris who turns out to be a marine scientist working down to 5,000m in Hawai.
