Aug 5 Day21 Sarthe Valley: Scenery worth see ing
Here in the Alpes Marcelles, the Sarthe river cuts deep into the junction of two tectonic plates, producing stunning walks along the edges of it’s ridges.
From St Léonard-des-Bois heading south to St Paul-le-Gaulter, has been the most rewarding walk so far. However I am not the only one to think so. Being a Sunday, I have been passed by a series of long distance runners; nearly run over by 5 young guys on motocross bikes, and numerous bicycles. One cyclist explained that everyone was out training, as these were the only big hills locally.
The title”Alpes” was given to the region in the 7th century when 2 waring Italian brothers from Spolète in Umbria stopped here, as the steep walled valleys reminded them of home in the Italian Alpes.
We stopped in St. Leonard-des-Bois, where I had a coffee. I ACTUALLY wanted a croissant as well, as the Boulangerie had sold out. Sadly, so had the cafe. There was a Sunday market in the Square, so as the Boulangerie did not sell dog food, I bought a couple of half chickens and a sausage, as standby in case we cannot find dog food (or a shop open) at the next village.
By 1PM it was too hot to carry on, so we will complete the next 3-4k when it gets cooler at 5 or 6 Pm. Now holed up in the woods, hiding from the sun.
